Why I Blog. (Review)

Why I blog. The author of this article is a blogger who “[writes] an actual newspaper column”. He explains the reason that he blogs, and how “blogosphere [- personal websites and blogs collectively]. ” works. Blog is a “free-form” of writing that any writers can publish their writings with their thoughts and knowledge without having an editor and publisher to shape his writing. It is risky to publish a writing without editing, but skipping those processes made blogging exposed to the public faster than ever, for examples, like Sullivan said, “[that is] what makes blogging as a form stand out: it is rich in personality”, and “In some ways, blogging’s gifts to our discourse make the skills of a good traditional writer much more valuable, not less”. Also, the readers’ feedbacks are available in any minutes.

Blogs tend to have information that state the key point of the subject, but for the one who wants more depth, there is “a hyperlink the ability to read the primary material instantly—in as careful or shallow a fashion as you choose—can add much greater context than anything on paper”. The other reason that he blogs is because unlike printed articles or papers, blogging is immediate and in real time. It can bring the sense of urgency and “vividness” to the reader. For an instant, one of his is experience is that “on [his] blog, [his] readers and [him] experienced 9/11 together, in real time. [he] can look back and see not just how [he] responded to the event, but how [he] responded to it at 3:47 that afternoon”. Through out the experience he could build a strong connection with his readers, and could make blogging more of a “conversation”, which could not happen through printed works. As Sullivan says, “The blogosphere has added a whole new idiom to the act of writing and has introduced an entirely new generation to nonfiction”.
